Walking Sticks

When choosing a walking stick, everybody is different in their requirements, and circumstances will determine what type is most suited to each person. There are some important considerations which should be taken into account when making the purchase of Daily Living Aids and associated equipment.

Walking sticks give greater stability and balance for the user, providing a wider base of support whilst maintaining good posture. They give the user greater confidence when walking, and assist with pain reduction and weight redistribution, due to the frame or stick being leant on for support.

This information has been produced by Indy’s Occupational Therapists to assist with this decision-making process, to ensure that the correct walking stick is chosen to help make daily living and maintaining independence easier for the user and their carer or family.

It is important to pay particular attention to the weight limit of the walking stick, to ensure that the intended user falls within the maximum user weight limit, to prevent accident or injury.

Please note: This information is intended only as advice and information when considering which walking stick to assist with mobility. It is important to follow manufacturer’s user instructions supplied with the walking stick. The information given is intended to be viewed as a general guideline – it is advisable to seek appropriate medical advice from a GP or Consultant.
